How to Receive Your Economic Stimulus Rebate-Filing Requirements

By Larry Weinstein, CPA | February 25, 2008

There is much talk and anticipation going around about the Economic Stimulus Rebates that are going to be given out.

This year there are many taxpayers, who while not obligated to file a tax return (and perhaps haven’t for many years) such as Social Security recipients, should definitely file one this year, in order to participate in this program.

Individuals who might not otherwise be required to file a 2007 tax return will need to file a return this year to receive the stimulus payment. The return must show at least $3,000 in qualifying income.

In most cases, payments will range from $300 to $600 for individuals and $600 to $1200 for joint filers. Taxpayers may receive $300 for each qualifying child.

See http://www.irs.gov/irs/article/0,,id=179096,00.html for the whole story from the IRS.

Online Tax Scams-Don’t Fall for This One!!

By Larry Weinstein, CPA | February 22, 2008

There are many scam artists that are sending out emails pretending to be from the IRS that say based upon your last year return, you have a refund due.  Please click here…..

The IRS will never contact you via email in this manner.

These folks are doing what is known as "phishing" (fishing for any personal information that you can be tricked into giving them).  Don’t respond to these emails…Don’t even open them up….

Here is an example, I received today…..If you run your cursor over the hot-link, you can see that the link is not to the IRS at all, but to some other website.

Be Careful!!!  It is a rough, cruel world out there!!!

After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined that
you are eligible to receive a tax refund of $480.23.
Please submit the tax refund request and allow us 3-6 days in order to
process it.

A refund can be delayed for a variety of reasons.
For example submitting invalid records or applying after the deadline.

To access the form for your tax refund, please click here

Note: For security reasons, we will record your ip-address, the date and time.
Deliberate wrong inputs are criminally pursued and indicated.

Internal Revenue Service

Does the IRS have your correct address??

By Larry Weinstein, CPA | February 20, 2008

Does the IRS have an up-to-date address for you??

If not, it may be possible that the IRS has been trying to get in touch with you.  Maybe, you have a refund due that they can’t send to you.  Or perhaps, you have a balance due, and they haven’t been able to let you know about it.

In either case, you will be well-advised to give the IRS your correct address.  Just because you haven’t been receiving your mail, doesn’t mean you won’t be held responsible for taxes due.

You can use IRS Form 8822 to change your address.  Check out this link for full information….http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc157.html
